WEDNESDAY PUZZLE — Important Carbohydrate-Specific Update: Thank you to all who brought my BROWN AND SERVE error to light. There are, in fact, premade rolls called BROWN AND SERVE, and I hereby apologize not only to the various companies who make them, but to my readers as well. As penance, I have deleted the passage doubting their fluffy existence, and will be restricting my carbs for the rest of the day.
There is an upside and a downside to solving crossword puzzles every day.
The upside is that you get to solve crosswords every day, and, as a bonus, you get better at them.
The downside is that you begin to recognize bylines and, at least in the case of the typically late-week constructor Byron Walden, he of ZOLAESQUE fame, seeing his name there can give you a serious case of “Dear lord, what evil does he have in store for me today?” Then you remember that it’s only Wednesday, and logically, the puzzle can’t be that hard.
What he has done, at least in my experience with this puzzle, is send solvers off on a wild-goose chase having to do with what this theme is about. I solved almost the entire puzzle thinking the theme was about one thing, only to discover that it was about something entirely different. And I didn’t even mind, because it provided a nice “Aha!” moment, which is hard to come by in Wednesday puzzles, the proverbial middle child of crosswords.
25A/38A: I would never want to bring BAD MOJO upon anyone, but I liked this cross-reference.
8D: Hi, kids! You know what a NEHRU jacket is, even if you don’t think you know, or your parents or grandparents deny ever having taken part in this fashion trend. It is a jacket that does not have a traditional lapel, but instead has a collar that stands upright against the neck. It was named for the former prime minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal NEHRU.
So there I was, happily solving a very smooth puzzle by Mr. Walden, patting myself on the back for having such an easy go of it when normally I struggle with his grids. I began to smugly think that I had figured out the theme, which clearly had to do with the fact that the starred clues were all phrases with the word AND in the middle [Sit tight. I’m about to find out that I was very wrong. — D.A.], which seemed deceptively simple for a midweek puzzle.
And then I stumbled upon the revealer at 7D. It’s clued as “URL ending associated with the beginnings of the answers to the six starred clues,” and the answer is EDU. I subsidize a young adult who is currently in college, so I recognized this as the suffix on the web address of a place of higher education.
What Mr. Walden, who is a college-level math professor by day, has done is to find a set of six three-word phrases (where the middle word is, in fact, AND; not that I’m bitter) where the first word is also the name of a college or university. So we have Brown University for BROWN AND SERVE, and Duke University for DUKE AND DUCHESS.
This was a fun one, and well modulated for a Wednesday by Mr. Walden and the editors. And most of the theme entries are debuts, which makes it feel fresh. I’ll let you find the rest of them; just look to the stars.
This puzzle has a pretty unusual set of theme entries: two 12’s, two 13’s and two 14’s. The sensible thing to do would be blow it up to a Sunday size, but the theme felt thin for that and the next best entry I could think of was BUTLER AND O’HARA.
So after much fiddling, I managed to make it work without too many cheater squares. The revealer EDU was completely serendipitous.
Almost finished solving but need a bit more help? We’ve got you covered.
Warning: There be spoilers ahead, but subscribers can take a peek at the answer key.
